4 Simple Ways to Improve Your Mental Performance

Here are four simple and enjoyable ways to sharpen your mind and improve your mental edge at school or work. These simple methods have been shown to boost your concentration, enhance your memory and hone your thinking skills:

Eat Fish

Did you know that fish is a great source for Omega-3 and DHA? In a study published in the journal Neurology, participants who have the lowest levels of DHA in their blood appeared to have smaller brain volumes compared to people who have high DHA levels. The study included more than 1,500 adults aged 67.

The study also revealed that people with low Omega-3 levels fared worse in tests covering abstract thinking, visual memory and executive thinking—this includes higher-level mental tests that involve multitasking and problem-solving.

Drink Milk

Research shows that milk gives the brain an extra boost. Researchers from the University of Maine conducted an experiment to prove this. A series of mental tests were given to 900 adults, measuring different mental skills like verbal memory, thinking skills, and spatial memory. Those who drank a glass of milk a day had a consistent edge over non-milk drinkers.

Get a Whiff of Rosemary

Inhaling a sniff of rosemary essential oil can help increase mental alertness. Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology seems to agree with this. In a study published online, researchers found out that exposure to rosemary aroma results in better mental performance in terms of speed and accuracy.

Take a Healthy Dose of Nature and Go for a Walk

In an article coauthored by University of Michigan psychologist Stephen Kaplan, people who took a stroll in the garden fared better in mental tests compared to individuals who took a hike downtown.
