If You Have a Cold, You Might Want to Read This

We have our personal set of remedies and concoctions to fight a cold. Although most formulae may vary, it boils down just to two things: vitamin C and zinc.

But before downing a bunch of vitamin C pills, you have to know a couple of things. The tolerable intake level for vitamin C—or the highest amount that one can take without posing any health risk—is 2,000 milligrams per day. This means you can gulp down 500 mg capsules of Vitamin C four times every day for two to three days.

Ideally, you should take vitamin C once you feel a cold creeping in. Don’t forget to wash it down with lots of water. At the same time, you might want to suck on zinc lozenges for a couple of days until the cold subsides.

Kick things off with chicken soup. Once you feel that tingling sensation in your throat or nose, dose it down with a cupful of chicken soup four times a day. While it hasn’t been proven that zinc and Vitamin C boost the chicken soup’s powers, experience has not taught us otherwise. So why stop?

With regard to taking vitamin B folate supplements, how much should one take?

Experts say getting 800 micrograms of vitamin supplements is smart since this amount also helps decrease the risk of colon cancer by as much as 50 percent. Moreover, 90 percent of the Americans are not getting enough folate daily. The tolerable intake level for folate is 1,000 micrograms per day.
