Tips for Working Parents

Work and parenting can be satisfying yet both can be stressful. With a little planning, however, you can reduce or handle problems on the home front more easily. And when you're secure about your child's well-being, you'll perform better than ever at work.

Learn Your Employer's Policies

Knowing your employer's policies helps you plan for both your daily routine and the event of a family crisis. Does your employer offer childcare reimbursement or a pretax, dependent-care account? Can you use sick or personal days when your child is ill? If an emergency arises, can you take work home or make up the lost time? In some cases, employers may offer job sharing or flexible hours. Work with your supervisor to solve any conflicts between your job and family.

Clearing the Hurdles

If you focus on solving your childcare problems, you'll be clearing your hurdles in no time. Your answers to the questions below can help pinpoint the areas that need your attention.

  • Do I have to make new arrangements every time my child gets sick?

  • Do I worry about the type and amount of attention my child receives in daycare?

  • Do I often interrupt my work to deal with family matters that could have been handled at home?

  • Do I worry that my child is scared, lonely, or getting into trouble while at home alone?

Once you identify your biggest hurdles, plan how you'll respond to each one in the future. Then adjust your plan to suit the specific needs and values of you and your family.

"I so appreciate Dr Lisa. She is hands down the most thorough doctor I have encountered yet- anytime I have any real concerns regarding my health, I make the extra effort to see Dr Lisa, even though I now live an hour away. I really appreciate that Dr Lisa listens to her patients' concerns, and covers all bases in addressing them, on all level."
